Two Organisation Tips to Help You Maintain Order in Your Storage Unit

Blog

Here are some organisation tips to help you maintain order in your storage unit.

Use coloured storage boxes to categorise your items

When packing items that they want to put into their units, many people simply use whatever cardboard boxes they happen to have in their homes and then scribble the category of objects that they place inside them on the outside of each box. However, if possible, you should use storage containers in various colours so that you can easily categorise and locate anything you put into your unit. For example, you could use pink storage containers for your clothes, white containers for your books and yellow containers for your music records.

This will mean that as your storage unit fills up, you won't need to, for example, walk all over the unit, checking labels on each of the boxes, to find out which of them contains the set of books you're looking for. Instead, you'll immediately see where the white containers are located in your unit (for convenience's sake, you should store all of the same-coloured boxes in the same area) and won't, therefore, spend any extra time looking for the things you need.

It will also make things easier if you ever send anyone to the unit on your behalf to pick something up for you, as whilst you might eventually memorise the location of various items within the unit, other people won't be familiar with the layout. They are likely to find collecting items for you much less stressful if they can, for example, go straight to the pink boxes to get your winter coat, instead of having to check every box in the unit.

Hang a large whiteboard on a wall near the unit's door

You should also purchase and hang a big whiteboard on a wall near the unit's door (you should do this with temporary picture hooks to avoid damaging the unit's walls). On this whiteboard, you should keep a list of every item you store in the unit, and then cross items off the list whenever you take them out (by crossing these items out instead of fully erasing them, you'll be able to refer to the whiteboard if you're confused as to why you cannot find an item, due to forgetting that you already took it out of the unit).

This will help you to monitor the unit's contents and will allow you to avoid wasting time searching for things in the unit that you removed during a previous trip. Referring to this list before you shop for new items will also mean that you won't unintentionally buy duplicates of things you've been storing in the unit.

How to Store Vintage Clothes

Hey! Welcome to my blog. I'm Victoria and I run an online vintage clothing store. It started out as a pretty small thing that I just did at weekends but as the business grew so did the amount of stock I was buying to sell. At first, I was just using my mom's garage to store boxes of things but soon my dad started to complain. Eventually, I decided to hire a storage unit. I asked my uncle who has his own self-storage unit for advice and he was able to make sure I got a great deal. I hope you enjoy my blog!
